PURE Youth Austin

Austin, TX

Austin is the state capital of Texas, an inland city bordering the Hill Country region. Home to the University of Texas flagship campus, Austin is known for its eclectic live-music scene centered around country, blues and rock. Its many parks and lakes are popular for hiking, biking, swimming and boating. South of the city, Formula One's Circuit of the Americas raceway has hosted the United States Grand Prix.

We are a 2 member team, myself Nishant and Shreyas. We just moved from New Jersey and Bay area to Austin just before the pandemic hit us. Being new to the city, not many friends and staying home, it has been a hard journey. But, our interest in volunteering and passion to support the less privileged children, we tried our best to contribute for Summer and Fall Projects.

We had a GoFundMe fundraiser created to raise money for PURE Femme project, as part of which we spread awareness about Period poverty in our family and friends.

As part of our Fall project/inner city project, we collected food supplies from the local neighborhood and provided supplies to KIPP Austin.

Fall/Inner City Project: KIPP is a charter school network that was looking for non-perishable food supplies that would helps its students during holiday break.

PURE Youth Austin team was able to support underprivileged families at KIPP Austin Alegria Primary school for the holidays with canned foods.

Shreyas Yemmanuru: Being a PURE Youth director has been an exceptionally meaningful endeavor in my life. It started when my cousin, Sriya, told me about how I could help change my community through PURE youth by establishing a chapter in Austin. I see it as the transition between planning to do something and finally doing something. It hasn’t always been easy with a pandemic restricting movement and the pressures of High School, but we made it work. It started out with the both of me and Nishant wanting to make a difference and being able to donate to Kipp Austin Algeria Primary School and to PURE Femme. PURE made me realize that the small steps to help along the way really matter.

Nishant Satyavolu: I, Nishant found out about PURE from my cousin Dhruv who is the current director of the Vizag Chapter. I have read articles about Dhruv’s work and it inspired him to reach out to the PURE directors to see if I could make a difference here in Austin. Covid pandemic hit us at the same time. We virtually raised funds for PURE Femme Project that could help conduct Period poverty awareness workshops in telugu states of India. I was thoroughly surprised to find the local communities in Austin also has shortages of food. Glad we were able to provide non-perishable food to the KIPP food shelter.
